On July 10, the Democratic Party issued the following statement.

Although the Democratic Party lost some of its pre-election seats in the 24th House of Councillors election, it approximately doubled its seats compared to the previous House of Councillors election. However, it was unable to achieve its stated goal of preventing the opposition parties from gaining a re-election majority. We express our sincere gratitude to all of you nationwide for your support and encouragement, along with our apologies for our failiure to live up to your expectations.

During this election the Democratic Party repeatedly appealed for changes in economic policy and firm adherence to pacifism, but those appeals failed to sufficiently reach citizens. That reflects our lack of ability, and we were unable to fully meet citizens’ expectations. The Democratic Party views this election outcome gravely, and is redoubling its efforts to restore the Party’s strength.

At the same time, we recognize that in this election a new shape for democracy emerged, with citizens at the core and the political parties that endorse this gathered around them. This trend must not cease, and must be made even more powerful.

In light of this election outcome, it is conceivable that the Abe administration will further accelerate its reckless behavior. The Democratic Party will firmly maintain its position of protecting citizens’ lifestyles and guarding Japan’s pacifism, and will work to firmly curb that reckless behavior while securing citizens’ understanding. Above all else, we will face citizens with sincerity and will listen to the voices of the people.

The Democratic Party – a party that moves forward together with the people.  We will not forget our origins, which are incorporated into the Party’s name, and will achieve politics that adopt the standpoint of the people.
